Laboratory for the Research and Documentation of Modern Greek Theatre

Aims and objectives of the Laboratory

1. To meet the teaching, research and training needs of the University of Athens Department of Theatre Studies at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the subjects referred to in Article 1 of the Laboratory Regulation.
2. To collect and record archive theatre studies material in printed and electronic form and to conduct research.
3. To engage in interdisciplinary cooperation on topics related directly or indirectly to the subjects described in the title of the Laboratory and to provide assistance to young researchers.
4. To work with other universities, research centres, cultural institutions and academic bodies, both in Greece and abroad, whose academic aims and aspirations coincide and are consistent with those of the Laboratory, complementing and being complemented by them.
5. To provide services to natural and legal persons according to the provisions of Presidential Decree 159/1984 on conditions for the provision of services by university laboratories to individuals and organisations of every legal form (Government Gazette A 53).
6. To promote research into topics concerning Greek theatre studies and in particular the theatre in modern Greece, and to undertake and prepare research and educational programmes on such topics.
7. To construct a bibliography of the relevant academic work at an international level, with the aim of establishing thematic databases and the long-term goal of disseminating information and supporting young researchers.
8. To develop a publishing strategy with the transcription and scholarly restoration of texts in manuscript, the reconstruction of important theatrical works of previous centuries, the preparation of critical editions and the publication of monographs and an academic journal in Greek and other languages.
9. To bring together all kinds of archive material (in printed and electronic form) related to the subjects which are the focus of the Laboratory’s research and study.
10. To create an archive of theses and doctoral dissertations submitted to the Department and to catalogue similar material from other academic bodies.
11. To organise special meetings, seminars, workshops, symposiums and conferences, as well as open courses and lectures focusing on theatre studies as history, theory and teaching practice.
12. To compile archives around the subjects described in Article 1 of the Laboratory Regulation and to digitise them, with the aim of creating electronic databases.
13. To create digital archives in order to promote the use of new technologies in theatre studies research and to disseminate know-how in the teaching of theatre studies at all educational levels.
14. To build a website in order to present and disseminate research and educational programmes prepared in the Laboratory and to strengthen the Laboratory’s work with similar laboratories and research centres in Greece and abroad.
15. To organise academic activities and forge links with national and local academic bodies as well as with organisations abroad (libraries, archives, museums, laboratories of other universities with similar goals), in order to foster cooperation with the ultimate aim of increasing awareness both of the history of theatre in modern Greece as an expression of Greek cultural heritage and of the contemporary Greek theatre as an intellectual and artistic creation that is embedded in contemporary education and culture on the international scene.
